Hey, Jim... We have loads of fun planning cruises, so Im recommending my own personal cruise planner at http://CandyBrock.com. It includes explanations, tips about everything from Azipods to Zuiderdam and includes reviews and links to loads of other cruising sites. Were about your age, and our best cruises have been on HAL and RCI. Our next is HALs new Zuiderdam in October and prolly TransCanal or Hawaii in May or June. Have fun!
I am not a agent or a book dealer - I only have one set of these guides (2 books total), you wont see me repeating and selling multiple copies or anything because this is all I have, I have used them personally here and found them to be VERY helpful in planning our cruise to fine tune what we wanted, THEN I contacted agents and said this is what I want, these dates, these options, and the calls went fast smooth fun and easy but BEST of all, I knew from the pre reading info, I was booking the RIGHT cruise for me without having to HOPE the agents recommendations were what I wanted based on their questions to me.
Check out the newsgroup rec.travel.cruises. Its pretty much as helpful for planning cruises as this group is for planning Disney vacations. There are several travel agents that frequent the newsgroup, any of which will be very happy to price out a cruise for you. Im guessing that a cruise specialist may be able to get you a better price than a Disney specialist - not 100% sure, but theyve been able to get some awesome deals for people.
In my parents case, my dad does *everything* for vacation planning except the packing -- from the research to the budgetting, to making the money, to choosing the itinerary, (ship in the case of cruises), planning excursions, etc. My mother does the pre and post trip laundy, ironing and packing, mostly because she is *neat freak* :-) and watns everything just right. I guess the packing in this case includes shopping for new clothes if necessary. If things were left to my mother, I dont theink theyd ever travel, as my mother doesnt enjoy the fuss and bother of arranging trips, nor the travel to get there. Once on board (or once in the country, in the case of land trips), she gets into the of things....but its really my Dad who **loves** to travel!
The air carriers have paid next to nothing to travel agents for years...so I let my TA do all my travel planning (cruises/tours/etc) except for one thing. I take care of any air-only booking. Heck, shed get paid only a couple of dollars on most any air package I make (theyre generally less than $200). So shed be doing it as more of a courtesy than anything else.
